Evelyn Mary (Mrs Layland); (also entitled to a Victory Medal); Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service. She was born in Leyburn, Yorkshire in 1884 and trained at Sheffield Union Hospital where she is shown in the 1911 census as a Sick Nurse. She was mobilised in 1914 and served initially at Woolwich Infirmary. In 1915 she requested permission to marry, her spouse was Robert James Layland who served in France with the Army Service Corps (no: S-4819) from 9-5-15. She was approved to continue military nursing and was sent to Egypt in September 1916, serving at the Citadel Military Hospital. She was demobilised on 13-6-1919. In 1934 she was nursing at the LCC Institution, Plumstead and in the 1939 register she is shown as Matron of the Islington Institution; she was also a trained midwife (1912). She died in 1950.
Sister Layland's husband was awarded a Silver War Badge (wounds) being discharged in 1919. They appear to have worked together in managing institutions and he is on the 1939 register (same page) as Master of the Islington Institution. He was awarded an MBE in 1947.
