An unusual and long military service spread over more than 40 years.
Richard William; CERA = Chief Engine Room Artificer. 4326 Pte Liverpool Regiment on star. He was born 1881 in Carlisle and his occupation was engineer fitter. He served initially with 10th (Liverpool Scottish) battalion, but transferred to the Royal Navy on 4-9-16. He served on HMS Canada and was promoted rapidly from ERA 3 to CERA. His WW1 pension papers exist which show that he served in the South African war with the Border Regiment (no: 7444, 1st battalion). He also served in the Merchant Navy in WW2 and was entitled to 1939-45 and Atlantic stars. He died in 1945.
