James William (Willie). His soldiers papers exist which show that he attested in August 1916 at the age of 22, was living in Shelley, West Yorkshire and his occupation was scourer. He was assigned to the RGA and completed a course in signalling and telephony in January 1917. He had a number of home postings before being sent to France; he disembarked at Boulogne on 19-6-17 and joined 262nd Siege Battery on 30-6-17. He was killed in action the following day (1-7-17) -- there were 7 other casualties to his unit on that date. He is buried in Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery.
