He was born in 1837 at Shoreham, Sussex and joined the Royal Navy in 1861 for a period of engagement of 10 years as a Carpenter’s Mate. He served initially on HMS Marlborough (which was a 131-gun steam and sail vessel). He signed on in 1871 to complete his time. He first served on HMS Asia which had seen action at the Battle of Navarino in 1827. He was awarded his LS&GC while on HMS Hart which was a 4-gun twin-screw gunboat, launched at Glasgow in 1868 and recommissioned at Malta in 1874. In 1891 he was living in Portsmouth and employed as a District Manager for a Friendly Society. By 1911 he was living in Battersea as a Naval Pensioner. He died in 1913.
