Lawrence. According to his service papers, he was born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1897 and was a coal miner when he enlisted. During the war he served on HMS "Hibernia" (a pre-Dreadnought battleship which served at the Dardanelles), HMS "Champion" (a light cruiser), and HMS "Egmont" (shore establishment on Malta). In 1921 he transferred to Portsmouth and was renumbered Po-21405. He was discharged from the Royal Marines in 1922.
