John Henry. He is also shown as serving with the Rand Rifles, number: 160. His soldiers papers exist, but are badly burned. They indicate service in German South West Africa, so he may be entitled to a 1914-15 star. They mention that he was a bricklayer by trade and served in France with 283rd (Army Troops) Company from May 1916. He is noted as a “smart, intelligent man”, which is borne out by his rapid promotion to Staff Serjeant. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre in the London Gazette of 17th June 1919.
